Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

Not only is the game graphically superb, the audio is another notch above. Part of the problem with modern games is that the sound elements are often under-appreciated. Not so here. The ironic part is that because the sound in Echoes creates such an ambience with the action, for the most part you don’t separate it as an individual element. It flows seamlessly into the game, changing tempo and style for each part of the planet with just the right mood at the appropriate time. For the most part outside of boss battles, the music is minimalistic but works perfectly for the loneliness of Samus’ mission. Proof here that orchestral scores and dynamic opus-like compositions aren’t always the best way forward.

It all sounds great, even better than the high-quality Metroid Prime soundtrack. Sound effects are equally well done, from the weird noises of Dark Aether enemies, the familiar (and scary as hell if you can’t figure out where it’s coming from) skree of a Metroid chasing after you, or the firepower of a Space Pirate half a screen away. The soundtrack and sound effects more than make up for the lack of voices.

Can you hear that? Well if not, you should be hearing it. The sound effects in Echoes are simply amazing. Crisp, clear, and realistic give you an idea of just how good the sound effects are in Echoes. When something explodes, like the flammable crates, you hear a very realistic explosion. When enemies are near, you hear them snarling off in the distance as they approach you. The sound in Echoes, is one of a kind; unsurpassed, from the snarling of the enemies to the explosions, needless to say, Echoes’s sound effects are astonishing.

Accompanying the brilliant visuals is stellar sounds and music. The sound effects of the blasters are great, as is the satisfying splat of enemies. Space Pirates still have the creepy calls, and the sound of rain, dust, and water is all perfect.

The sound effects certainly pack a punch and will have the walls shaking on a decent entertainment system.

Background mood music, by composer Kenji Yamamoto, works well, and the sound effects, via Dolby Pro Logic II, are compelling.

The sound design is excellent, with the many weapons and enemies underscored by appropriate aural accompaniment. Sound: 8 out of 10.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
IGN
Sound: 10
The score by Kenji Yamamoto is as moody as ever, even featuring throwbacks to some previous games. The sound effects are punchy and the voice acting is well implemented.

Gamezone
Sound 9.2
For the first time in the series we get actual voice acting in the game. The majority of the voice acting is very well done with only a few head shaking moments wondering what the actor was thinking while performing the lines. The music in the game continues the excellent music found in the previous Prime games along with the legendary Metroid themes found in the earlier games. Sonically the Prime series always did an amazing job of shaping the atmosphere in the game and Prime 3 is no exception.
