Lightning Strikes – June 24 2012

Lightning 2012

The house rumbled shortly before 3AM PST and yes, it woke me up. A thunderstorm was approaching from the South. This time of year I have the microphones and video camera at the ready for such events. I placed the High Definition MKH-8040ST microphones and the FlipHD camera just outside the front door and waited.

The first storm headed North and was on the West side of me. There were lots of rumbles and bright light flashes but it was very far away and heading into Canada. The second storm arrived around 4 AM PST and was on the East side of me and was producing some nice lightning flashes and some serious rumbles. It was still very far away but as it approached it passed right over the lake and the city of Sandpoint Idaho. Surprisingly, once it arrived there was not much sound. I kept on recording but it was all distant rumbles and no claps.

The video has the sound from a storm that rolled through last month and I added it in under this video. The video was recorded at 60 frames per second so when slowed down it looks really cool and at twice the frames as normal video the quick strikes are captured nicely. -Enjoy! Frank

Wow, great video, pictures and sounds!
All is so quiet at 4 AM it’s almost surreal.
Do you know Pierre-Paul Feyte? He’s a passionate photographer who likes shooting stormy skies and gorgeous landscapes over here in France.
You can check out some of his work below. Enjoy!
