I was out recording with my Sennheiser MKH-416 the other day trying to record a small dribbling stream down behind the house. On the way back up to the house I walked by and old satellite mounting post set in concrete that I had removed years ago. I thought that if I stick the microphone inside the 7 inch steel pipe I might hear something strange. I’ve hit the post before and it makes a standard metal clank so I ...More →
As I was cleaning up the yard after years of Ultimate debris from making all the Ultimate sound effects collections I tried to move a 55 gallon barrel drum that has been sitting around for the last year or so. To my surprise it was half full of water. I assume the water had dripped in from the 3 inch hole on the top over the winter and spring. I found out that as I moved it the water sloshed ...More →
Recording is underway for Ultimate Rockslide II Sound Effects Library. I traveled back to the site where a majority of the first library was recorded. This time I was armed with a Sennheiser MKH-8040 and a few new ideas for rock sound effects.
VIDEO: There is no fancy music and I quickly synced the recorded sound effects with the video. It’s all SFX!
The last time I was crawling around on ...More →

Where Do I Begin?
I spent a lot of time with my Grandfather when I was growing up. He was a scruffy old man that liked to keep EVERYTHING. I guess it rubbed off on me and I tend to save stuff that other people think is crazy. Some of the things I ...More →
I like to stay home…
I really wanted to stay home on the 4th of July and goof around the ranch. So much for that idea. After some serious debating on whether or not I wanted to brave the traffic in town I decided that since the massive new highway bypass was to be completed by the same time next year that it was a good idea to ...
June 27, 2011 – Sagle, Idaho USA – Every year the county grades the dirt roads here in North Idaho after the spring run-off from the mountains. I heard the grader pass by the house so I went down to the dirt road below my ranch and here is some of what I recorded.
These BIG machines sound really cool. Diesel engines, air hoses, dirt scraping and high speed passes with the ...More →
Here is a preview with audio, photos and a little background on the making of my forthcoming SFX library called MANGLED METAL.
So here I am at the tail end of recording for my next SoundBox HD Pro library and I decided to go all out and dump some metal from the JD tractor. I set up 3 microphones, a MKH-416, Sanken CSS-5 and the stereo MKH-8040ST. I wanted to get some intense crashes with the junk metal I have around ...More →
Testing, testing, 1,2,3… This is just a test. Today I took some time out from the recording and editing of my next Ultimate library and strapped a microphone to the back of my John Deere 4110 tractor and drove around the ranch to see what I could learn. I usually only record breaking and burning stuff so this is relatively new to me. I used my AT 835-ST mic for reasons unknown except if it fell off I would not ...More →
For the last month or so I’ve been driving my wife crazy with my microphone and recorder rigs sitting near the front door. I’ve been trying to record the thunderstorms that were forecast by the experts. So far I’ve been batting a thousand with thunder fail so last night I moved all the gear downstairs to the studio to make good with my wife.
I checked and double checked the weather forecast and there was a remote chance for scattered thunderstorms. ...More →
Here is a second preview with audio, photos and a little background in the making of my forthcoming sounds effects library called ULTIMATE CHAIN.
This time I wanted to record some gearbox type chain sound effects. I have an old wood cooking stove that was here on the ranch when I purchased it and have been keeping it around for sound effects recording. I’ve dropped it, smashed it and ...More →
